Habemus Papam! Spirit FM Celebrates the Election of a New Pope Leo XIV
The Diocese of Saint Petersburg joins Catholics around the world in celebrating the election of a new pope. On May 8, 2025, Cardinal Robert F. Prevost was elected the 267th pope by the College of Cardinals gathered in Conclave at the Sistine Chapel. Born in Chicago and most recently serving as prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, Pope Leo XIV now takes up the mantle of leadership following the passing of Pope Francis on April 21.
“May God bless our new Holy Father. I pray that his ministry will unite the human family in pursuit of peace and the common good of people of every race, religion, and language,” said Bishop Gregory Parkes of the Diocese of Saint Petersburg.
Bishop Parkes invites all Catholics and people of goodwill to join in prayer for Pope Leo XIV as he begins this new chapter of leadership in the Church.
To mark this momentous occasion, Bishop Parkes will celebrate a special Mass of Thanksgiving at 2:15 PM on May 8, 2025, at the chapel of Saint Petersburg Catholic High School (6333 9th Avenue N, Saint Petersburg, FL 33710), joined by diocesan leaders, students, faculty, and staff. All attendees must check in at the main office upon arrival. Members of the media are welcome and interviews will be available following the Mass.
The traditional white smoke signaled the election of the new pope on May 8, followed by the announcement from the balcony of Saint Peter’s Basilica: “Habemus Papam!”—"We have a Pope!"
Pope Leo XIV, as the successor of Saint Peter, now serves as the Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Christ, and spiritual leader of over 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide. His election marks a new era in the Church's mission to proclaim the Gospel, promote unity, and serve all of humanity.
