WBVM Spirit FM 90.5

Director of Development and Underwriting

General Description:  With a spirit of evangelization and joy, the Director of Development and Underwriting leads fundraising strategies for Spirit FM to ensure sustainability of the ministry. This position is responsible for implementing programs that secure funds for operational expenses each year. Additionally, this position is tasked with increasing annual revenue and fostering new donors.  The individual collaborates with the Station Manager, Promotions Director, Program Director, and announcers to develop on air presentations that promote gift-giving, business support, and partner relationships.

Essential Functions:

    • Oversee the annual fundraisers; establish through industry norms, trend duration, and style of on-air presentations in collaboration with station management; 
    • Coordinate volunteers for fundraisers and special events;
    • Establish new contacts and follow up new leads with commercial and non-commercial donors of WBVM while building underwriter/station relationships; Follow-up on existing clients through sales calls and correspondence
    • Create and update rate card for dayparts and programs; understand latest market trends in sales and implement accordingly;
    • Collaborate with DOSP Stewardship Office and Catholic Charities to identify, apply and obtain grants, sponsorships and other funding sources for operations and special events;
    • Assist in the creation of long-term funds including endowments and scholarship accounts;
    • Assist in creating ways to generate revenue sponsorships through various other fund raisers including station concerts, conferences, and promotional events or any other events necessary to the station; 
    • Oversee the communication vehicles and software processing (Allegiance) used to connect with donors including direct mail, personal notes, email and other electronic media, media releases, letters, and emerging technologies etc.;
    • Identify and establish all ways of payments and donations including but not limited to direct mail, online giving, church appeals, and text to give;
    • Establish new relationships with potential donors and grow relationships with current donors;
    • Create new ways to generate revenue through various other fund raisers including special events, Women’s conference etc.;
    • Coordinate with Station Manager, Program Director and Promotion Director in public relations including public events, church visits, creating press releases, etc.
    • Establish annual appreciation event for volunteers, steering committees, and business underwriters
    • Work with local and national business and organizations to obtain on-air giveaways;       
    • Other duties assigned by either station management or Diocese of St. Petersburg;

 

The Director of Development and Underwriting must have a clear vision of the goals and mission of WBVM and the Diocese of St. Petersburg.  The individual must be able to communicate the goals for the station and for the Development and Underwriting Department.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Mostly office setting, although occasionally outdoors on live remote. 
  • Professional attire in accordance Pastoral Center policies required. 
  • Occasional lifting required (typically under 30 pounds). 

 

Qualities and Skills:

  • High School Diploma with at least three years of experience in successful fundraising and development.  Prefer:  Bachelor Degree with at least two year experience in radio or television marketing.  Five years of experience in non-profit fundraising and management including all aspects of overseeing pledge drives, campaigns, and special events.
  • Experience in using Allegiance software or comparable fundraising software is essential. Graphic artist design and certification as a Non Profit Executive (CFRE) a plus. 
  • Must have understanding of budget principles and work within those parameters.  Ability to work independently and be available when called upon.

General Description:  With a spirit of evangelization and joy, the announcer is to be an effective on-air representative of WBVM 90.5 FM Inc., its affiliates, and the Catholic Diocese of St. Petersburg. As Digital Media Producer, the employee shall execute the creation of all aspects of social media and web site production/design including creative production concepts, short video recording and editing and distribution in consultation and collaboration with station management and team.  The employee shall work with Underwriting, Promotion and Programming in building an effective brand for the station, listeners, and stakeholders. 

Essential Functions:

            Announcer:

  • Work assigned air shift from start to conclusion of allotted time;
  • Announce and log public service announcements, promotional announcements, weather, music and other general information with clarity and precision; interview guests and other community leaders.
  • Possess good working knowledge of the on-air board, digital/analog recording and playback systems and telephone systems;
  • To have working knowledge of production room and ability to create prerecorded on-air announcements, programs, for play at a later date;
  • Participate in station sponsored promotional events with good working knowledge of remote broadcast set up including PA systems, mixer, microphones and recording gear;
  • Participate and emcee station sponsored event, events of the Diocese of St. Petersburg, its ministries and churches; 
  • Coordinate with engineer in logging accurate transmitter readings and knowledge of how to operate the remote transmitter, Emergency Alert System, and other broadcast equipment in compliance with Federal Communications Commission guidelines;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Some of the qualities of the announcer are proper enunciation, energy, consistency and dependability, adaptability to situations, and attention to detail.  We are a Catholic institution and applicant should be knowledgeable of the Catholic faith and comfortable working within the framework of the Catholic church and willing to share the faith. The individual must be an authentic on-air representative who understands and supports the mission of WBVM 90.5 FM Inc. and the Diocese of St. Petersburg.

          Digital Media Producer:

  • Coordinate with Program Director and team for all digital media production activities of WBVM 90.5 including video, photo, and digital social media promotional pieces including A/V recording, editing, and distributing view on all platforms;
  • Expert knowledge and skill in video mixing and editing with precision;
  • Knowledge of industry trends in digital media production and emerging platforms; 
  • Assist in maintaining relationships with all offices, departments, churches and schools affiliated with the Diocese of St. Petersburg;
  • Assist in maintaining relationships with other non-Catholic organizations including other non-profits, churches, schools and service agencies;
  • Assist in recording promotional announcements for upcoming events;
  • Assist in copywriting and PSA writing/management;
  • Assist in planning and coordination of live remote promotional events including concerts, parish visits, and other station events;
  • Assist Spirit FM management team in planning and organizing fund-raisers for Spirit FM;
  • Other duties as they arise.

The Digital Media Producer must have a clear vision of the goals and mission of WBVM and the Diocese of St. Petersburg. The individual must be able to work independently and creatively to maximize the sound and promotional value of station, clientele and ministries associated with the station and diocese.

  • Assist in maintaining relationships with other non-Catholic organizations including other non-profits, churches, schools and service agencies;
  • Assist in recording promotional announcements for upcoming events;

WBVM welcomes all college students and high school graduates who have a desire to learn more about radio and communications. An internship with Spirit FM can lead to success in the radio and broadcasting business in a number of areas.  Internships are open to students who are studying communications, marketing, radio and television, computer science, or electronic engineering.  Internships are not paid positions; however, students earn college credit for the semester/quarter. Therefore, all applicants must be enrolled in college and have an interest in radio, journalism, telecommunication, marketing, and/or liberal arts programs that apply to communication.  WBVM has relationships and may post job openings at the University of South Florida, Tampa; Hillsborough Community College; St. Petersburg College; Pasco/Hernando State College; Saint Leo University; Southeastern University among others. WBVM also accepts Full Sail and CSB students.  WBVM will also accept interns and job applicants from professional trade schools. WBVM will also consider volunteers to train for possible careers in broadcasting.
 
A position for an Announcer/Promotions Coordinator was posted October 3, 2019 and ran through October 15, 2019.  There were 25 applicants, 2 were interviewed, 1 hired.  Applicants came from Indeed.com, Allaccess.com, DOSP.com, hisair.net and word of mouth.  Hire came from dosp.com and word of mouth.
