November's Story: Courtney from Sarasota, Florida
"Your station has been such a blessing to me. I don’t need lectures. I just need prayers and that positive influence to keep me wanting to go back."
It all really started about a year ago when I began diving deeper into finding my spiritual path through God. I’ve always believed in a higher spirit. I was baptized Catholic as an infant, but that was the extent of my spiritual journey up until that point. Over the past year, as I’ve sought to deepen my understanding and connection, I’ve wanted to return to Catholicism. However, I’ve also found myself bouncing back and forth, wanting to just focus on believing in Christ.
During this time, I started reading books by Wayne Dyer. The most inspiring one, There’s A Spiritual Solution to Every Problem, included many Bible verses, and it resonated deeply with me. His words, combined with the verses, made me realize that I needed to explore these ideas further.
About a month ago, I started listening to your station. I had been searching for a station that didn’t focus too heavily on gospel music but still provided something with spiritual depth, along with a bit of entertainment value. I wanted to hear more than just music; I wanted to feel inspired. It’s been such a blessing to hear your prayers during the day. I love being able to close my eyes at a stoplight, reflect on what you’re saying, say "Amen," and then continue on my way. That’s been really special for me.
A month ago, I finally took a big step. It was scary, but I walked into St. Patrick’s Catholic Church here in Sarasota. I went up to the desk and spoke with the ladies there, explaining that I was baptized, that my grandmother had been a devout Catholic, and that I had a traumatic experience as a child when I was around four years old. I remember coming out of Sunday school, screaming and crying after seeing a very graphic depiction of the crucifixion. My mom said, “I’m not taking her back. If she’s going to react like that, there’s no need to keep bringing her to Sunday school.” And that was the end of it for a long time.
But when I walked into St. Patrick's, the ladies were so warm and welcoming. They said, "Everyone has their own path, and we’re just so happy you’re here." It felt very similar to how I feel about your station: inviting and non-judgmental. It’s not about being told what I should or shouldn’t do, it’s about hearing prayers and receiving positive encouragement. I don’t need lectures. I just need prayers and that kind of uplifting influence to keep me coming back.
I’m really eager to grow in my faith, and your station helps support that in between the times I’m able to attend church. I’m currently taking OCIA classes every Monday, which has been an enlightening and wonderful experience. And your station has been supporting this journey.
