Pope Leo XIV to be admitted to Rome's Gemelli Hospital on Tuesday

The Holy See Press Office announced on Monday the date of the pontiff's hospitalization for surgery.

Pope Leo XIV will be admitted to the Gemelli University Hospital in Rome on late Tuesday morning.

The Holy See Press Office made the announcement on Monday, one day after the pontiff said, during his Sunday Angelus, that he would undergo surgery to remove a nodule from one of his lungs.

The nodule, he explained in his Angelus address, was found during a routine medical checkup and prompted his doctors to advise him to have it surgically removed.

"The doctors believe it is advisable to operate. I have decided to undergo surgery to remove it, following their advice," Leo said in his address.

According to Matteo Bruni, director of the Holy See Press Office, who spoke to ACI Prensa, the Spanish-language sister service of EWTN News, the pontiff is expected to remain hospitalized for about one week at Rome's Gemelli Hospital, where he will continue his recovery after the operation.

Due to the pope's upcoming hospitalization and recovery, he will no longer celebrate the closing Mass of the meeting "10 Years After Amoris Laetitia: Proclaiming the Gospel with Families Today." Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, the dean of the College of Cardinals, will replace him as the celebrant for the closing Mass.

Additionally, according to one of the organizers, Father Giacomo Costa, SJ, the conference's concluding summary will no longer be published on Wednesday night. Costa told journalists Oct. 12 that the pope would like to have time following his hospitalization to read the document and possibly add his own response before making it public.

A press briefing on the night of Oct. 14 marking the conclusion of the conference will still take place at the Holy See Press Office as scheduled.
