Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him, and said to him, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?"
Have you ever mentored someone? It's a challenge and an opportunity- you have this person who shows potential but still has so many places where growth is needed. It takes perseverance and patience on your part to see the "project" through.
In today's gospel reading Peter tells Jesus to call to him to come out onto the water. Jesus does and Peter walks on the water, but then starts to sink when he takes his eyes off Jesus and instead focuses on the rough water around him.
But Jesus didn't point, laugh and roll his eyes. He reached out and grabbed Peter and kept him safe. The word that translates to, "O you of little faith…" is found in the New Testament only in Matthew. It is used by Matthew for those who are disciples of Jesus but whose faith in him is not as deep as it should be.
Next time you feel like Jesus might be disappointed in you because of some doubts you have, remember that He showed Peter mercy and patience and continued to work in him to shape him into the leader He knew he could be. You are a good project, and He will see you through.
