A Pep Talk for the Most Insignificant

By Abby
Gideon - another underdog of the Bible and the patron Saint of motels...

But [Gideon] answered him, "Please, my Lord, how can I save Israel? My family is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the most insignificant in my father's house."The LORD said to him: I will be with you, and you will cut down Midian to the last man."

Judges 6:15-16

Gideon - another underdog of the Bible and the patron Saint of motels. Ok, I made that second part up. He is a farmer who God chooses to lead a small army to defeat the Medianites who were thieves and bullies, to put it lightly.

I love Gideon. He is pretty straight up with God. He doesn't understand why God would choose him to lead an army. He doesn't understand what God sees in him. And truth be told, there isn't much to see. He doesn't have confidence or skill. God would be silly to choose him° if He wasn't God. But He is, so what He sees in Gideon is what He can do through him.   We are so focused on what we need to do to make ourselves stronger, better, and more intelligent, when our focus should be on how we can open our hearts and our lives to what God wants to do through us because if we can do that, then we have everything on our side.

Where in your life are you focusing too much on your abilities instead of God's?

Father, may my confidence come only from what you can do through me.
