When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, "Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety." Luke 2:48
Today we celebrate Saint Joseph, husband of the Blessed Mother and foster father to Jesus. With associations like that, it's no wonder he doesn't get a whole lot of "speaking parts" in scripture. In fact, one of the few stories we hear about him after Jesus is born is one that doesn't make him out to be a candidate for the Parent of the Year award. He and Mary accidentally leave twelve-year-old Jesus behind in Jerusalem. Yes, of course, there were many contributing circumstances, but Luke doesn't leave this part of the story out.
We see Joseph's goof and hear about his anxiety and are reminded that there is room in God's plan for our imperfections. Joseph was meant to be Jesus' earthly father, not because he was perfect but because God's plan was perfect and Joseph perfectly cooperated.
