Why Are Your Standards High

By Abby
Have you ever corrected someone or called them out...

John 12:5-6

"Why was this oil not sold for three hundred days' wages and given to the poor" He said this not because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief and held the money bag.

In hindsight, John is able to point out Judas' duplicity. He knows where his heart was - not with the poor, but covered in his own greed.

At the time, only Judas and Jesus knew what Judas was really thinking. Shoot, maybe Judas didn't even know; maybe he was so blinded by his sin that he thought he actually cared about the poor.

Have you ever corrected someone or called them out on a less-than-virtuous act and realized that your motivation was also slightly lacking? The easiest example and most common in my life is correcting my children's actions, like a smart mouth or a word they shouldn' say - not because of what God would want these young men to act like but because I don't want to look like a bad mom. I'm waiting for the day when I correct one of them and they pipe up with, "but we don't get yelled at when we say that at home!"

I'm not saying we shouldn't have high standards for ourselves and those in our charge, or that we should not speak truth when it needs to be spoken, but if our motives are self-serving and not God-serving, we're being fake. Someone will see through it. Maybe not today, but eventually. Let's try to be honest with ourselves, God and others and pray that over time, we can show others how to be like Christ, not with our words, but with our lives.
