Deuteronomy 10:17-18
For the LORD, your God, is the God of gods, the Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who has no favorites, accepts no bribes, who executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and loves the resident alien, giving them food and clothing.
Have you ever tried to describe a complex idea to a child? It's not the easiest thing in the world to do. You stumble through words, trying to find a point of comparison but that just leads to having to describe more things because they know so little about the world. I imagine that is the feeling God must have when he tries to reveal himself to us. I love this description of God that Moses is giving the Israelites. It must have been confusing to them because it is full of contradictions. He is at the same time a stern judge and a comforting friend. Our little minds have trouble contemplating someone who is both mighty and gentle at the same time. While the image of this seemingly contradictory God may evade us most times, it's comforting to know that He is truly too big for my little brain to fully comprehend. Next time you wrestle with a little doubt as to who God really is, remember we are just infants trying to find a point of comparison.
