John 1:22
So they said to him, "Who are you, so we can give an answer to those who sent us? What do you have to say for yourself?"
"Who are you?" In today's Gospel reading, John the Baptist is asked that question twice. The first time he tells the questioners who he is not: The Messiah. The second time he tells them who he IS - but not his name, his profession or his hobbies -John tells them who he is in relation to Jesus. He is the one who is preparing the way for the Messiah.
"Who are you?" is a simple three-word question, but the answer speaks volumes. I personally am not comfortable shaking hands and introducing myself as Abby, adopted daughter of God or Abby, believer in the Father, Son & Holy Spirit. But how do I answer that question when it's coming from me? How do I see myself?
It's easy to pick apart and criticize ourselves when it comes to the ways of the world - our appearance, our job, our parenting skills - but as we journey into the new year, one of the best things we can do for ourselves and our relationship with others and God is to figure out the answer to that question: Who are you? It's written all over the bible - you are holy, chosen and beloved. Tell yourself that every day.
