John 16:7
Jesus says, "But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go. For if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you."
A classic breakup cliche- if you love something let it go if it comes back it was meant to be yadda yadda. It's a little dramatic but it applies to a lot of relationships.
I think this is most important when you know they would be better off somewhere else. The coworker you don't want to lose but you know they've outgrown the position and deserve something better. The boyfriend or girlfriend who would be a better fit for someone other than you. Or the loved one who is fighting to stay alive and you need to have that courageous conversation about letting go.
In today's Gospel reading, Jesus knows his disciples are heartbroken and don't want to live without him but the greater good is if they let this form of Jesus go, they and everyone who opens himself up, can receive the Spirit. Sometimes we need to release something or someone so something greater can happen. What do you need to let go of today?
