Umbrella Prayers

By Abby
I imagine God nodding and saying, "I know I just did that. I was there..."

Jeremiah 14:22

Among the idols of the nations are there any that give rain? Or can the mere heavens send showers? Is it not you, LORD, our God, to whom we look? You alone do all these things.

I've always found it peculiar when we read the words of prophets and they tell God who He is and what He does. I imagine God nodding and saying, "I know I just did that. I was there. Actually, I'm everywhere." Then I remember that when people are telling God what He has done, it's more of a profession of faith, remembrance and gratitude. "You were there. You did this. We acknowledge you and give thanks because we know you will continue to provide."

Our prayer should always have this same confidence. Our petitions shouldn't just ask God; they should recognize God at work. There's a story about a small rural town in the middle of the country that was in the midst of a great drought. The people came together day after day to pray for rain and finally the preacher asked his congregation why they didn't believe God would answer their prayer. When they said they did believe, he asked then why had none of them been carrying their umbrellas.

Let's shift our prayers to be umbrella prayers - ones filled not with doubt, but with confidence that the one we pray to can do and has done all things.
