Psalm 84: 11
Better one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere. Better the threshold of the house of my God than a home in the tents of the wicked.
Mom confession: I've convinced my sons that sleeping on the floor in my bedroom is a treat reserved for only special times. When they get to do it we put a bunch of blankets down and bring the sound machine in, put on some wave noises and it's a big ole slumber party.
They have great comfy lofted beds in their room with soft blankets and pillows. When they sleep on the floor one inevitably ends up sideways and the other gets forced off the blankets onto the scratchy carpet. But they love it. The love it because they are closer to me. They'd rather be on the ground where my feet walk than in their own special spot because it means they can hear and feel my presence more. Ah, once again, faith like a child.
This verse from the book of Psalms is one of the easiest to see reflected in our own lives. What have you given up to be closer to God? No fancy car so you can give more to your church? Or maybe you've let go of a relationship that you knew was not leading you closer to Him.
We don't like to be uncomfortable and we don't like to go without. But if we could adopt the attitude of the psalmist (and our children!) and understand that the real blessing and joy is found in the presence of God, we'd come to realize that it is the very BEST place to be.
