Psalm 139:1-2
LORD, you have probed me, you know me: you know when I sit and stand;you understand my thoughts from afar.
One uniting thread in all of the relationships in my life is that I want to be known, but not just known, known and loved. My friends, my husband, my co-workers° even my children. I want them all to know the real me and my heart's desires and then, even though some of those things might not be beautiful or nobel, I want them to still want me. If I dig in really deep, what I want most is to see and understand the true ME and still like all that I see in a mirror that doesn't allow me to lie to myself.
What a beautiful reminder we are given by King David in the Psalms today. The God of the universe who knows all, knows us fully and intimately. He knows our thoughts and actions, what we are going to say before we say it. And here is the part that should make us all well up with tears, a few verses later right after David acknowledges how well God knows us, he remembers that God is always present, surrounding us, never leaving.
No matter how much we try to be known by others or even know ourselves, we can find comfort in the truth that God knows us more and loves us more. What a beautiful foundation to build on.
