Throwing In The Towel

By Davis
This dad throws in the towel and calls in the reinforcements...

Mark 9:24

Then the boy's father cried out, "I do believe, help my unbelief!"

I am a "Do It Yourself" kind of guy. I like to get my hands dirty and dig into projects. I also like to think I can do anything I put my mind to. Like that one time I thought I could replace the shower in my master bath all by myself. I picked out the new shower enclosure, tore out the old one and started the install. It wasn't too long into the installation process that I realized the placement of the shower drain from my 1950's house did not match up with the drain on the new enclosure. Oops! How on earth was I going to move the drain that was embedded into the concrete foundation of the house? Long story short, one day, one plumber and $450 later I was ready to install the new shower. Not every project is a total "Do It Yourself".

I love the attitude of the boy's father in today's Gospel reading. His son was possessed and Jesus' disciples were having no luck driving the demon out. Finally when Jesus shows up the boy's father begs him for help. Jesus reminds the father that anything is possible if you have faith. That's when this dad throws in the towel and calls in the reinforcements! Sometimes it's like we have to hit a dead end before we seek His assistance. How often do you recognize your own shortcomings and ask for God's help?
