The Part You Play

By Abby

1 Corinthians 12:28
Some people God has designated in the church to be, first, apostles; second, prophets; third, teachers; then, mighty deeds; then, gifts of healing, assistance, administration, and varieties of tongues.

I started a book club. That's kinda like a vegetarian starting a grilling club. But so far, so good. We are a third of the way through book one and it's been a challenging read so far. We are reading Ultimate Makeover, The Transforming Power of Motherhood. So far in Chapters 1-3 it's been more about femininity that actual mothering and there have been a few thoughts that would definitely rub some women the wrong way.

But I love it. I love that the traditional roles of man and woman are now the rebellious choice! Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I want to go back to women not being able to work outside the home, but in this book, the author quotes an outspoken feminist who noticed that women today are quite unhappy. She makes it clear that women trying to be just like men and expecting men to be just like women is a significant source of unhappiness.

That's what I thought of with the Thought for the Day. Not everyone is meant to do everything in the church. Some bring gifts that others don't have. And that's ok! Women aren't meant to do everything a man can. She's meant to do what a man can't and vice versa.

What if we celebrate our shortcomings as an opportunity for someone else to shine - whether it's another member of our church community or the person we kiss goodnight every evening. Let others serve, shine and grow. When one of us does these things in Jesus' name, we all reap the rewards.
