The Masks We Wear

By Abby
There is something intriguing about masks. Lots of kids...

Romans 8:22-23

We know that all creation is groaning in labor pains even until now; and not only that, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, we also groan within ourselves as we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies.

There is something intriguing about masks. Lots of kids will be wearing them tonight and most of us wear one every day as we disguise some part of who we are. We aren't completely honest with each other about our struggles, our sins or our insecurities. When we do this we keep the Holy Spirit from moving.

Today's readings speak about potential, anticipation and hope that accompany awaiting the fullness of God's promise of eternal life. In the gospel reading we read about the mustard seed and the potential found in the tiniest of starts.

Yet, we cover up what God wants to reveal in us - greatness! Either because we are scared, guilty, insecure or apathetic. We think that we are better off settling for average or mediocre instead of taking a risk and taking off the mask to reveal our true selves. Tomorrow is All Saints Day - a day where we celebrate people who were great Christians. None of them pretended to be someone else. They walked with Christ before them and allowed God to use the ugly, the flawed, the unsure and the ill equipped parts of them to bring hope to others. Don't forget, YOU have that same potential. Just take off your mask!
