Luke 8:20-21
He was told, "Your mother and your brothers are standing outside and they wish to see you." He said to them in reply, "My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it."
Did you sit at the cool table in the cafeteria in high school? I don't know if I did or not. Probably some thought I did, but I always looked to other tables and figured those were the really "cool" kids. It's all relative, I suppose! We have this desire to be in-the-know. To be part of what is going on. We want to be on the inside.
Here in Luke's gospel, he uses the word "outside" and I wonder who felt like an outsider around Jesus. The outcast? The uneducated? The pagan? Maybe even the obedient Jew who wasn't sure how to process everything Jesus was saying? But Jesus makes it clear, that just like the fertile soil we read about last Saturday, the one who is his mother and brother is the one who hears the word of God and acts!
So step 1: hear the word. Step 2: make a move! Do something to change one habit, one practice to be more in line with scripture or the life of Christ, the word made flesh. It will put you at the table that is much more important that the cool kids'.
