Remembering The Why

By Davis
You probably just "gave something up for Lent". But do you know why you did it?

Remembering The Why "And the king will say to them in reply, 'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.' " Matthew 25:40

In my family we have a tradition of honking twice as we depart from a family visit. I do it, my brother does it, my sister does it. Now that her grandchildren are grown even they do it! No one remembers how it started or why. I think our relationship with God can be like that sometimes. You probably just "gave something up for Lent". But do you know why you did it?

In today's first reading we hear a bunch of rules. The Jewish people had been following them for so long they forgot why they existed in the first place. It had become routine. In Matthew gospel Jesus reminds us why these rules were put into action in the first place. All of the commandments we find in God's word can be broken down to three basic principles. Love God. Love Yourself. Love Each Other. Not a big surprise really. But here is the kicker, it's by following the second and third principle that we complete the first!

Question for Reflection

Now that we remember why, how can we put today's reading into practice?

Lord help me to recognize the need around me.
