Jesus said to him, "Rise, take up your mat, and walk." John 5: 8
In today's gospel reading, Jesus asked the man who had been ill for thirty-eight years, "Do you want to be well?" Instead of saying "Yes!" and recognizing Jesus standing before him, the man explains why he has not yet made it down to the healing waters. I always imagine that he keeps staring at the water where he thinks the healing will come from instead of looking at Jesus who can do all things and is right within arms reach.
We too have the chance to encounters Christ AND to be a messenger for others to encounter Him. Sometimes we get stuck in the routine or even our tough circumstances. It takes courage and strength to look away from the world around us and straight at Jesus as our source of healing and hope.
How can you ensure that you never miss out on an encounter with Christ?
Lord Jesus, open my ears to the sound of your voice, my eyes to your presence before me, and my heart to your healing and mercy.
