Human beings swear by someone greater than themselves; for them an oath serves as a guarantee and puts an end to all argument.
Have you ever been in a tense situation where the only way to settle it is to swear or promise? Maybe someone accused you of having cards up your sleeve in last weekend's game of Uno and in order to get the table to back off you had to say, "I had that Wild Draw 4 in my hand! For real! I swear!" Unfortunately, swearing or even taking an oath today doesn't necessarily mean the person is telling the truth. They've become just words to many.
There is a greater responsibility on us as Christians to be true to our word, whether it's in marriage, a commitment we make at work or just a game of Uno - because we KNOW what a true promise and covenant is. We've experienced it and are the beneficiaries of it. So next time you are about to use those words, remember, you are representing one who made a pretty important promise to you. If you can't keep that promise, don't make it and if you've made it pray that you will always be true to it.
