Jesus said to his disciples: "Beware that your hearts do not grow weary from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life, and that day catch you by surprise like a trap."
Luke 21:34
What happens when someone is fixated on someone else, or too drunk, or too anxious? They become "blind" to the obvious, and they disregard others who don't seem as important. Events that are important seem trivial. Jesus is giving us timeless words here as we prepare our homes and hearts for the coming of Christmas.
In the holiday rush it is only too easy to disregard the needs of a family member or neighbor because we are too busy getting ready for the next social event or business party. Gifts and holiday surprises are wonderful indeed, but not if they become the main focus of the season. This scripture verse reminds us how easy it is to become distracted. I doubt any of us want to be unprepared for an office party or holiday family gathering, so if we prepare for such a festive occasion, let's also pray and prepare for whatever comes our way.
Let's look for an opportunity to serve and help somewhere this next month. Join me as I continue to pray for peace. I hope that we can all celebrate the joy that is in giving this Advent Season!
