Point To You

By Davis

Acts 14:15

"Men, why are you doing this? We are of the same nature as you, human beings. We proclaim to you good news that you should turn from these idols to the living God, 'who made heaven and earth and sea and all that is in them.'

Some of my favorite plotlines in movies or television involve people being mistaken for gods. I remember an episode of Gilligan's Island where a tribe shows up on the island and mistakes Gilligan for a great king they once had. The king was dead but there was Gilligan looking exactly like him so they thought he had come back as a god. In true sitcom fashion hilarity ensues, eventually the mistake is made known and the whole gang has to run for their lives.

Of course the book of Acts is not a sitcom or movie, but the apostles found themselves stuck in this very plotline. They healed a man in the name of Jesus but the people of this town, who were pagans, thought Paul and Barnabas were their pagan gods walking among them. I think it's pretty much in our human nature to take advantage of a situation like that. If it weren't would there be so many TV shows and movies based on those circumstances? But Paul and Barnabas were no fools, they knew the credit belonged to the one true God and they wanted to make sure people understood that.

Now, I highly doubt that you or I would be mistaken for a god anytime soon. But we all have the opportunity to show the power of God through our actions. The talents God gives us can be used for our own glory and benefit. Or they can be used to point toward the one who gave them to us. The choice is up to you.
