Momnesia and God

By Abby
I used to have a mind like a steel trap...

Mark 8:16-17

They concluded among themselves that it was because they had no bread. When he became aware of this he said to them, "Why do you conclude that it is because you have no bread? Do you not yet understand or comprehend? Are your hearts hardened?

I used to have a mind like a steel trap. I could remember every detail of a conversation, the exact spot I put something, my whole schedule without looking at a calendar. Then… I had children. Momnesia is for real, y'all. I don't know if it's hormonal or the result of a prolonged period of sleep deprivation, but now, I forget about entire conversations.

Throughout scripture we read about the apostles forgetting the lessons Jesus taught them. Over and over again they learn, then forget, then Jesus teaches them again. It's a cycle we read in every Gospel, actually it's in the Old Testament too.

So here we are right after Jesus takes a small amount of bread and feed five thousand and the apostles are worried that his reprimand to them is because they didn't have enough bread. If I was in Jesus' position, I would've said, "Are you kidding? Remember the bread and fish thing? I thought that was pretty cool, but apparently you guys weren't impressed enough to even remember."

How quickly are you to forget God's goodness and faithfulness? He moves in our lives, speaks to us, gives us his graces and we rejoice. Then a day later we lament or worry. He has proven his love over and over. It's worth remembering. What can you do starting today to avoid amnesia when it comes to what God is doing in your life?
