Light and Darkness

By Elle
There was no electricity when Jesus used his metaphors of light.

"The lamp of the body is the eye.
If your eye is sound, your whole body will be filled with light;

Matthew 6:22

There was no electricity when Jesus used his metaphors of light.  Think of all the important activities people needed to plan during the day when there was light.  Perhaps danger lurked in the dark, or even with the light of fire, even basic activities were more complicating.  I didn't have air conditioning all weekend, so I made the most of the daylight without lights because it seemed they added extra heat, and at night, I simply used the minimum light I needed.  At dusk, I gathered my books and water and the refrigerated towels and camped out in the coolest spot in the house.  I did not want to use any lights at night because I felt they added extra heat.

What I reflected in those moments of darkness is that in our own lives there are periods of light and there are other times where our world is darkened by the effects of sin.  In the times when we easily can be the light for others, and we seek God in our daily lives, we will be able to bring Christ's light to those we meet. Other times, perhaps we need to stay "camped in" and seek God's will in a more solitary way, but we can rest knowing we can still seek the Light of His Presence and let His Light shine on us.  Through it all, we can be at peace, knowing the Light of God is with us.
