Ladies, Hug Your Girlfriends!

By Abby
And here God is, occupying himself with two women. One old and supposedly barren and the other, just barely out of childhood...

Luke 1:41-42

When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, "Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb."

Today, we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe and I'd like to reflect on friendship - a continuation of Davis' reflection from yesterday, but with a focus on girlfriends. No offense guys.

In the great timeline, in this moment, we are on the brink of God changing the world for all of eternity. And here He is, occupying himself with two women. One old and supposedly barren and the other, just barely out of childhood. But between the two of them and between the children growing within them, He makes a supernatural connection. A dear friend of mine gave me a beautiful card recently and reflected on this miraculous friendship: in that moment, two friends became the first humans in history to experience the joy of Christ.

What about your friendships? We put a lot of weight on other relationships - spouses, parents and children - but there is so much power in a community of friends, especially strong, faith-filled women. We can take a cue from Mary and Elizabeth. Both were humble - they thought more of each other and more of God than they did of themselves. And both were faithful servants of the Lord, ready to accept His will and cooperate with His grace.

How could we change our marriages, churches, schools and families if we fostered friendships that modeled Mary & Elizabeth's? Where we recognized and celebrated Christ's presence in one another and where we put other's needs before our own?
