His Most Important Hire

By Abby
If you were on a committee and had to hire a person to do the most important job at your office, what traits would you look for?

Luke 1:51-53

He has shown might with his arm, dispersed the arrogant of mind and heart. He has thrown down the rulers from their thrones but lifted up the lowly. The hungry he has filled with good things; the rich he has sent away empty.

If you were on a committee and had to hire a person to do the most important job at your office, what traits would you look for? For most professions, you'd want confidence, intelligence, persistence and determination. God looks at us differently and seeks us out for different reasons and different purposes.

He sought out Mary to be the mother of His only son - God himself incarnate on earth. She held, in her womb for 9 months, the Creator of the universe. I'd say that's pretty high up on the list of important jobs. And for this job he found an unmarried, poor teenager from a town from which, according to some, "nothing good comes out of."

And what about the rich and powerful of Mary's day - you know, the people that we would maybe hire for the job? Where are they now? Who were they? For the most part they have disappeared from sight while she is still celebrated round the world.

Today as we celebrate the Assumption of Mary - that she was so special that she was assumed body and soul into Heaven after her death - let's remember to strive for the qualities that God sought out for His most important hire - humility, obedience and faith.
