They were subject to Roman authority and were bound by law...
Should anyone press you into service for one mile, go with him for two miles. Matthew 5:41
You may have known the phrase "going the extra mile" came from this verse in Matthew. But did you know it meant having to carry a Roman soldiers 100 pound pack? The people listening to the sermon on the mount did. They were subject to Roman authority and were bound by law to serve a soldier for a mile or get thrown into jail. Now Jesus is telling them to go two! Talk about a heavy burden.
I would guess that not many people in Jesus' day actually continued on with that soldier for an additional mile. But if they did, they would have an additional 5280 feet to courageously proclaim the Gospel to that soldier. And because of their additional service, I bet he would have listened.
Jesus, how are you calling me to go the extra mile today?
