Matthew 13:33

He spoke to them another parable. "The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed with three measures of wheat flour until the whole batch was leavened."

Last year at around this time we had the same gospel reading and I chose the same exact passage for our daily reflection. Not because I'm lazy but because I think it's an important lesson to remember. One of my favorite songs on Spirit FM right now is Dream Small by Josh Wilson. As a society we have somehow come to the conclusion that unless we are making some huge contribution to something we shouldn't bother. We tend to underestimate the ability for small changes to have a big effect in our lives.

We don't think much about it today but yeast is a very powerful little thing. It only takes a small amount to make bread expand two or three times its original size. Later on in the Gospels, Jesus tells us that even the smallest amount of faith can move mountains. All the little blessings God sends our way allow us to grow in faith. With that faith comes great power to make a difference in the world around us. What small things can you do today that will make a difference in your life or the life of those who cross your path?

When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth that proceeds from the Father, he will testify to me.

Sometimes we think that unless we are doing some big thing in the name of Jesus no one will recognize God's goodness. Isn't it a little arrogant to think we have to do something big so God can show off? The new Josh Wilson song Dream Small. It reminds us that the little things we do make a big difference. Jesus sent the Holy Spirit not only to guide us but to show the goodness of God through the things that we do. So next time you feel the need to make a big splash so that God can be glorified, remember that Jesus shows Himself through us in the little things.
