Don't Beat Yourself Up!

How is the Lenten commitment coming along? 

Today you are making this agreement with the LORD:
he is to be your God and you are to walk in his ways
and observe his statutes, commandments and decrees,
and to hearken to his voice.

Dueteronomy 26:16

How is the Lenten commitment coming along?  Is it easier to recommit on Saturday, after the meatless Fridays?  Yesterday, we may have forgotten it was Friday in Lent, and maybe we ate a hot dog or chicken nuggets, or maybe we are struggling (like I am) with a particular commitment we made.  

Let's don't beat ourselves up! That completely misses the point of Lent!  In the struggle, if we get a little curious and take some time and ask ourselves why we are struggling with whatever the commitment is, then we may be getting to the "root" of the struggle and can then work on offering the struggle up in prayer and ask for the grace to persevere, to unlock the "mystery" of why it is difficult.  Maybe it is a food or drink we have overindugled in, and the struggle is that the science is that our bodies are resisting this new change we imposed. Knowing the in depth reasons can prevent us from running around beating ourselves up because we are craving for instance sugar or caffeine, when the body is naturally going through the motions of withdrawal. 

Let's pray that God guides our hearts and as we humbly walk the path He sets for us, we will stay strong.
