Challenging Times

By Davis
How can you possibly feel secure when there is so much random violence going on around us...

It is the LORD who goes before you; he will be with you and will never fail you or forsake you. So do not fear or be dismayed. Deuteronomy 31:8

As I listened to a newscast the other day I was struck by the amount of anxiety people were expressing about simply taking their family out to dinner. Our overall sense of security has weakened to the point of hardly being there. For good reason. How can you possibly feel secure when there is so much random violence going on around us? Yet as Christians our security is supposed to come from God not our circumstances.

In today's readings we get two clear examples of God's desire for us to find our security in Him. In the first reading Moses is telling the Isrealites he will no longer be leading them. Until this point Moses was their security. But now God will be leading the way into the promised land and reminds them that he will never fail or forsake them. In the Gospel reading Jesus is telling us to be like children and compares us to lambs. Neither of which can take care of themselves. Our security is not in our ability to care for ourselves or avoid tragedy. Our security lies in the knowledge that God is above any tragedy that can come our way. So no matter what you see in the news, take heart. God is on your side!
