but the LORD was not in the fire.
After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound.
When he heard this,
Elijah hid his face in his cloak
and went and stood at the entrance of the cave.
1 Kings 19: 12-13
Tis the season of Vacation Bible Schools where young ones play and learn more about the Bible. This passage was always a favorite of mine to teach with the kids because they can imagine God appearing as an image like fire or in the verses before this one, an earthquake, or even a hurricane wind. So when the little ones hear for the first time that God appears as a light silent sound, a tiny whisper, their eyes get big and they wonder, "what?"
In our own prayer time, I will guess that many of us have a "honey-do" list for God. (I do) It is also important that we spend time in God's presence, simply being still, and letting the temporary distractions drift away if we can. God will guide our minds if we think out things in His presence, not forcing our minds to "hear" something, but simply letting our words rest, and focusing on His Word, Jesus. (also see Psalm 27)
