Being Sent to your Room

By Abby
A few days ago I sat on the couch to read with the boys...

Mark 3:35

For whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.

Well that's good news isn't it! Yay! Let's party! But wait - if doing God's will unites us with Jesus, then what do NOT doing God's will (sin) do?

A few days ago I sat on the couch to read with the boys - before you think I deserve the Mom Gold Star, know that it was one of those book sets that comes with an audio reader where it reads to you and you turn the page when it chimes - anyway, we "read" three books. Graham picked one. Liam picked one. Then I got to pick one. When I made my choice World War three broke out. They didn't like it. I corrected them and Liam dropped it but the little one was in a mood and kept pressing and talking back until finally I yelled and sent him to his room. That act of sending a child to their room - we do it to remove them from the conflict but it also separates them from the family. If that doesn't illustrate sin then I don't know what does.

I know I don't want to be removed from the family of God even for a minute yet I still struggle with choosing bad things that are not God's will. We don't necessarily experience "being sent to our room" in the same way a child does but if you think about what happens with that distance, Graham couldn't see us, couldn't feel my hand on his shoulder, couldn't hear my voice… It really shows how sin separates us from God. But just like I went to his room to talk to him, dry his tears and give him a hug, God seeks us out, even in our sin, wanting to bring us back close to Him. Let's strive, one day (maybe one hour) at a time to remember how good it is to be part of this family strive to stay as close as possible.
