A Great Responsibility

By Davis

For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control.

"With great power comes great responsibility." Uncle Ben (Spider-Man 2002 )

When I read our first reading for today the above quote is the first thing that came to mind. As I write this we are working through a pandemic, and many people have chosen the path of fear. Fear that our liberties are being taken away from us. Fear that our economic future is in danger. Fear that our loved ones or ourselves will be afflicted with the virus. Some even fear that God has forsaken us.  Paul is reminding us that God's love gives us power over fear. Not only that but it gives us the power to lead by example.

In that scene from Spider-Man Uncle Ben is talking to Peter about a change that he's going through. Ben mistook Peter's gaining superpowers for puberty but what he said just before that famous line about power resonated with me even more. "These are the years when a man changes into the man he's gonna become the rest of his life. Just be careful who you change into."

In the last few months we have undergone a massive change in our lives. It's up to us to forego the fear the world would have us believe in and use the power of love and self-control that Jesus gave us to change into the person He wants us to be.

How has your faith given you courage in the last few months?

Lord mold us into the persons you want us to be.
