A God of Second Chances

By Davis
When you were young did you ever mess up in public and get the stink eye from your mom...

Luke 11:30

Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation.

When you were young did you ever mess up in public and get the stink eye from your mom? Of course you did! We all have! No matter how cute you tried to look or how much you batted your eyes the only look she gave you from across the room was that steely eyed look of disappointment. But if you messed up and looked across the room at mom and mouthed the words "I'm sorry" that look always turned into a smile. Well, maybe an hour later, but you know what I'm talking about.

Are you ready to learn something cool about God? He looks down and sees our mistakes and he is ready to punish us for them. But the desire of his heart is that we turn away from those sins instead. Because more than anything else God wants to be in relationship with us. We hear story after story in the bible about God giving people second chances. That's what Jesus is talking about here. God sent Jonah to the people of Nineveh to warn them that they were about to die for their sins. He was about to wipe them off the map!  But the people of Nineveh were given a second chance. You see, when they heard Jonah proclaim their condemnation they immediately repented. The whole town fasted and wore sackcloth for 40 days to repent for their sins. Now here is Jesus telling the crowd that they are doomed. The Jews were looking for God to send them a king to save them from the tyranny of the Romans. But instead he sent them a king to save them from themselves. They (we) didn't get the sign they wanted. Instead we got the sign that we needed!
