Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word." Then the angel departed from her.
Today, on the Feast of the Annunciation, we recognize and celebrate Mary's "yes!" Her faith, her obedience and her humility. All of that was part of her yes.
As a person who likes to have a plan, I have to marvel at Mary's… flexibility. Maybe that's not the perfect word, but she definitely allowed God to bend her in ways that I would struggle with. I know the preparation for her marriage to Joseph wasn't necessarily what we do in the months and weeks leading up to marriage now - she was likely not contemplating a hashtag or DJ options - but she was still thinking and praying about the direction her life was going. Then the angel Gabriel came and basically did the ultimate record scratch.
I wonder if my need for a set plan has been an excuse for a lack of obedience and faith. Am I so set in my plan that I refuse to say, "Thy will be done?" Thank you, Mary for showing us how to desire God's will over our own plans.
