The Cause of Our Sins

By Gustavo Facio
What strong words Jesus gives us in today's gospel!...

If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed than with two hands to go into Gehenna, into the unquenchable fire.

Mark 9:43

What strong words Jesus gives us in today's gospel! What strikes me the most about this passage is that Jesus never mentions something necessarily bad as the cause of our sin. On the contrary, he mentions the hand that is necessary to work, the foot that is necessary to walk, and the eye that is necessary to see. This is because everything that God gives us is good, it is the misuse that we give to those things that leads us to sin.

Let's think for example of the things we use every day. Technology is good, but many times we use it to sin. Work is good, but it can also be a cause of sin. Our ministry is good, but many times we make it the cause of sin. Many times, by thinking that we can overcome what induces us to sin, we end up sinking deeper into it. Let's break now with what is leading us to perdition. If your social networks are the cause of your sin, delete them, if your work is the cause of your sin, change it, if your ministry is the cause of your sin, leave it, and let God act in your life.

Are you willing to end the cause of your sin?

My good Jesus, give me the strength to uproot the things that prevent me from being with you.
