Matthew 11:29
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves.
How do you define yourself? A lot of times we like to use our jobs or accomplishments to tell others who we are. Sometimes, this is a practical concern. We could just be making conversation with someone and they ask, "What do you do?". They are likely referencing your job, not necessarily that you are, "striving for holiness", or, "following Jesus". The issue arrises when we truly start believing that our jobs, accomplishments, or status define us. We can be tempted to make these the driving force in our lives, constantly seeking to feed our ambition to distinguish ourselves from the rest of the pack. In this verse, I believe Jesus is telling us to choose a different path; to define ourselves by who we are in Christ. In that identity we escape the desire to distinguish ourselves with worldly accomplishments and instead rest in Him and the fact that we children of a loving God.
