When was the last time you ran into a street preacher? You probably thought he was a little crazy. My wife and I took a weekend trip to the big city a few weeks back and I’ll be honest the street preachers in Times Square were a little disconcerting to me. I imagine most of the people in Jesus' time felt the same way about John the Baptist as we do about street preachers. Yet Jesus is telling us that John is more than just a street preacher. This disheveled man who wears weird clothes, eats weird food, and lives in a weird place is actually the prophet God sent to proclaim the coming of the Messiah. Maybe what makes us most uncomfortable is not the words they are saying, but the example they are living. Leaving the comforts of the world behind to live out the gospel. Just like Jesus gave up being God to become man.
What comforts is Jesus asking you to give up during this Advent season so that you can live the Gospel more fully?
Lord, help me be more like John the Baptist and show the people around me the way to your son Jesus Christ.
