The Jesus we encounter in the New Testament is a lot of things: compassionate, loving, faithful, holy. One of His least talked-about attributes is His practicality. He encounters us in our humanity and meets us where we are, knowing we are going to fall and struggle. In His mercy, He reiterates a truth in this verse that may have been known to His hearers: the Golden Rule. The popularity of this concept is a testament to its practicality. It invites us to shift our perspective and see the world through the eyes of another. We evaluate our actions as one who is effected by them. This can help guide us in determining the goodness and consequences of what we do. It's a moral tool given to us by God that we'd do well to utilize.
