Psalm 51:19

My sacrifice, O God, is a contrite spirit; a contrite, humbled heart, O God, you will not scorn.

In this verse David, having just sinned with Bathsheba, expresses how guilty he feels about what he's done and longs to be forgiven by God. Those of us who try to walk in His will know that sting of knowing you've chosen self instead of God. When we realize our offense we naturally want to be reconciled and that reconciliation begins with humility. David rightly describes this "contrite" and "humbled heart" as a sacrifice. In seeking forgiveness, you're offering up your ego to God. Think about it. Reconciliation with God begins with the knowledge that we've messed up, that we've sinned, that we're not perfect. The great blessing is that God is always ready to forgive us... even when we find it difficult to forgive ourselves. So, as you remember to keep meat off your plate this Friday make sure to keep your ego from separating you from God's love.
