Masks

By Gustavo Facio
The image of the woman washing Jesus' feet is an invitation to prostrate ourselves before him without masks...

Now there was a sinful woman in the city who learned that he was at table in the house of the Pharisee. Bringing an alabaster flask of ointment, she stood behind him at his feet weeping and began to bathe his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them, and anointed them with the ointment.  Luke 7:37-38

The image of the woman washing Jesus' feet is an invitation to prostrate ourselves before him without masks. That woman came to Jesus just as she was, a known sinner. She prostrated herself at the feet of her Savior and washed them with tears of repentance, dried them with the same hair that denounced her sin, and anointed them with the perfume she used to seduce men. That woman came before Jesus without a mask, with all her defects. Only Jesus was able to see what had changed in her, for others she was still an undesirable. Today's Gospel invites us to get closer to Jesus with all our shortcomings. It invites us to put our sins before those feet that were pierced out of love for us. Let us have the courage to put down our masks and go to Jesus with all our humanity so that we can see the wonders he can do in our lives. Let us allow ourselves to be enveloped in the mercy of God, let us be brave and open our hearts and recognize that we need God.

What is the mask that prevents you from seeing Jesus face to face?

Blessed are you Lord because you know even the smallest atom of my being and despite my defects you still love me.
