A Question of Memory

By Gustavo Facio
I think gratefulness is a question of memory; therefore, our gratefulness is directly proportional to how much we remember about the help we have received...

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for His mercy endures forever.

Psalm 136:1-3

I think gratefulness is a question of memory; therefore, our gratefulness is directly proportional to how much we remember about the help we have received. Following this idea, we can say that, if we are not grateful to God it is because we most likely have forgotten what he has done for us. Today's first reading is an invitation to look at our past and see the presence of God in it, and the psalm is an invitation to glorify Him for his mercy and love. We are living in a world that constantly challenges our faith and makes us believe that, although we can believe in God, not everything that happens in our lives is thanks to his infinite goodness, but to our own intelligence and hard work. Sometimes it is difficult to be grateful when things are not going the way we want, but it is important to understand that God has a better view of what lays ahead. Let us take a moment to find the presence of God in our lives and thank him for his immense mercy.

Have you given thanks to God today?

Blessed are you oh Lord for all the things that you have done in my life.
