Listen to Your Beloved

By Carly Bosse
It is such a simple invocation from the Father...

"Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; then from the cloud came a voice, 'This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.'"

Mark 9:7

It is such a simple invocation from the Father, "This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.”   Peter, James, and John, having just witnessed the Transfiguration of Jesus and the appearance of Moses and Elijah, are rightly overwhelmed and terrified. The Father says to them, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.”  Peter tells Jesus that they should stay at the top of the mountain. The Father says to Peter, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.”  Jesus is seeking to love his disciples, to ease their fear, and to tell them that they must go back. There is more to be done. The Father speaks the consoling and affirming words to Jesus’ heart, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.”  When the disciples look around at the end of this incredible glimpse into Heaven and see no one, but Jesus alone with them, they are consoled by the words of the Father, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.”  In your hardships, joys, or seemingly mundane moments throughout this day, let your gaze come to rest on Jesus, who is there with you in it all. Hear the words of your Father in heaven, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.”

Take a moment and turn your heart to the Lord. How is he looking at you? What do you want to say to him right now? Then, "listen to him."

Jesus, help me keep my gaze fixed on you and help me to share every moment with you today.
