It is I!

By Gustavo Facio
Something that strikes me about this Gospel passage is that Jesus' disciples were with him all day while he multiplied the fish and healed people...

But he said to them, “It is I. Do not be afraid.”

Jn 6:20

Something that strikes me about this Gospel passage is that Jesus' disciples were with him all day while he multiplied the fish and healed people. They had been with him seeing his power and his glory, and still, they did not recognize him when the storm came. In these last 2 years, it seems that things are getting worse and worse. The winds of violence, racism, hunger, disease, and war, whip our fragile boat that is getting closer to sinking. But in the midst of the storm, Jesus tells us, “It is I! Here I am, do not be afraid. I will take you to dry land.

Just like the disciples who were in the boat, we too have witnessed the power and glory of Jesus, and yet we are afraid of the things that are currently happening. Today Jesus reminds us that he is with us, reminds us that we must be brave and keep our eyes on him in times of storm as we do in moments of glory. Jesus is here and there is nothing that can separate us from his love. Let us be brave and let us not let fear prevent us from recognizing Jesus who constantly tells us: It is I! I will take this boat to dry land.

Do you recognize the presence of Jesus even in the storms?

Blessed be Lord because you are always with me even when I do not feel your presence.
