Is Slime-Making Dangerous?

By Fernando
If you've got kids, you're likely already aware of the slime-making craze. Kids across the country are mixing up their own squishy goo to play with using just a handful of readily available ingredients. It's fun, easy, and encourages kids to use their hands for something other than swiping and tapping a tablet or phone.
If you've got kids, you're likely already aware of the slime-making craze. Kids across the country are mixing up their own squishy goo to play with using just a handful of readily available ingredients. It's fun, easy, and encourages kids to use their hands for something other than swiping and tapping a tablet or phone. WPRI 12 has a really good overview on the trend...

Sounds fairly harmless, right? Well, that's what makes this case so baffling. A girl in Massachusetts was left with second and third-degree burns recently after extended contact with a key ingredient in making slime: Borax. KABC-TV 7 and Consumer Reports took a closer look at the hazards associated with working with the laundry aisle chemical...

Older children and adults should avoid direct contact with the eyes and make sure to wash their hands after making and playing with the slime.

As a reminder, it is always a good idea to store household cleaning and laundry products out of reach of children. If Borax does somehow come into contact with a child's eyes, be sure to rinse with plenty of water for 15 minutes.

In case of accidental ingestion, call the Poison Control Center or seek immediate medical attention.

Basically, it seems like following a slime-making recipe containing Borax can pose some risks but, as long as you and the kiddos are careful, you'll probably be alright. If you're just not convinced, maybe you can mix up some dough in the kitchen instead. You'll be able to make a mess, get your hands into something (somewhat) squishy, and teach kids about bread-making. I've never tried this recipe, but it looks like it could be a lot of fun!
