How much do you love your stuff?

By Rob
What do we truly desire from life?

For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.  MT 6:21

I've been getting reminders on my computer from Microsoft letting me know that my operating software will soon become unsupported as they migrate completely to Windows 10. And Microsoft recommends that I buy a new computer rather than just replace my OS because, even though my PC works fine, it is over 5 years old. Consider how many of us go out and buy new products to replace ones that still work perfectly. Because we live in a consumer driven society and are bombarded by advertisements every day, we feel the need to have the latest, greatest things. Be it electronics, clothes, cars, or household gadgets, we continue to want.

In today's gospel, Jesus is teaching his disciples to not become consumed by materialistic things. These things have benefits and often help us in many ways. But when we become so attached to them that we focus our time & efforts on surrounding ourselves with more stuff is when we get in trouble. When we grow envious of others who may have newer clothes, a nicer car, or the latest phone is when we fall victim to materialism.  When our possessions (or lack there-of) begin to dominate our lives, then Jesus's words can speak to us.

What do we truly desire from life? Do we seek God's word as much as we search out material goods? Do we look forward to our daily relationship with Jesus as much as a shopping trip to the mall? Where is your heart leading you today? Mine is certainly not focused on buying a new computer.
