His Perspective on Priorities

By Fernando
An initial read of these verses may leave the impression that Jesus is being a little unreasonable. Why would he tell this man who lost his father to, "Let the dead bury their dead."?

Luke 9:59-60

And to another he said, "Follow me." But he replied, "[Lord,] let me go first and bury my father." But he answered him, "Let the dead bury their dead. But you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God."

An initial read of these verses may leave the impression that Jesus is being a little unreasonable. Why would he tell this man who lost his father to, "Let the dead bury their dead."? As with a lot of Scripture verses, you have to look deeper to find the meaning behind this seemingly strange statement. What is the point Jesus is actually trying to make? It is not that we shouldn't honor our dead or love our parents. Those are good and honorable things to do. Jesus is offering us a greater truth here: that everything we do must be considered secondary to the will of the Father. To be true disciples, we need to put God above all other concerns... even our families. The beauty of this is that putting Him first will enrich those other aspects of our lives. Giving God the first fruits of our lives and attention will not take away from our handling of life's other concerns. On the contrary, it will help us to take them on better equipped and will a fuller heart!
