I've seen a lot of war movies in my life, from ones depicting medieval warfare to the hi-tech battlefield of today. I've learned that one of the worst places you can send an army of any era is through a valley. Your troops are forced into a tight position, surrounded by high ground. The terrain leaves you extremely vulnerable to ambush or to being surrounded by an army that closes off the entrance and exit of the valley with their forces. This verse emphasizes that even when we are at our most vulnerable, walking a path (not just any path, but a valley) surrounded by darkness, He is with us. Even though we may feel alone, He's never not close to us. He is our defender and no ambush catches our Lord off guard!
