Faithful to the Faithful One

By Br. Lucius Amarillas
Today's first reading mentions the patriarch Abraham, an outstanding individual in salvation history...

Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.

Romans 4:3

Today's first reading mentions the patriarch Abraham, an outstanding individual in salvation history. Abraham remains an inspiring figure for us, not only because of the direct revelation he experienced by God but especially by Abraham's faith. Many times throughout Genesis, Abraham faces immense challenges that would tempt many to lose faith. How easy do you think it was for Abraham to remain faithful while preparing his son for the sacrifice? Yet, Abraham offers us a model of courage to trust in the Lord.   In the Gospel, Christ reminds His listeners about their worth, or better yet their commission. To be Jesus' follower is to continue the courage of Abraham, acknowledging God by saying "yes" to Him, especially in the face of uncertainty and unpopularity. The example of St. Teresa of Avila, whom we commemorate today, exemplifies the mission of courageously living the Gospel amid a challenging world. I invite you to join me in considering the many times we are tempted to forget God's promises to humanity. Our ancestors in faith like Abraham and Teresa were tempted to lose faith on many occasions; yet, they held firm, choosing to be courageous, living according to God's commands, acknowledging and trusting in Him.
